Do I have Apple Watch Series 1 or 2?

How do I tell the difference between them?

What about the Sport vs. Standard?

When you’re trying to sell an old Apple Watch, it can be difficult to decipher which type of Watch you have. Aside from the red Digital Crown (does anyone else think that looks terrible?!) on the Series 3 with cellular service—they all basically look the same! So, how can you tell the difference between each Apple Watch? Let’s take a look and all the different types…

  • 1st Gen. Sport (discontinued)
  • 1st Gen. Standard (discontinued)
  • Series 1
  • Series 2 (discontinued)
  • Series 3 GPS Only
  • Series 3 GPS + Cellular

Wow! Did you know that there have been SIX different versions of the Apple Watch released already? (And this isn’t including the Nike+ or stupidly expensive Hermès and Edition Watches.)

Which Apple Watch Do You Have?

How to Find Your Apple Watch Model Number

To identify the type of Apple Watch you have, first locate your model number.

  1. Open the Settings on your Watch
  2. Select “General,” then “About”
  3. Scroll down until you see your model

Once you’ve found your model number compare that and the features (printed on the back of your watch) to find out which type of Apple Watch you have!

Apple Watch 1st Gen. aka Series 0 (Sport & Standard)

Apple Watch Sport was the cheaper (and more popular) of the two 1st Gen Watches.

  • Model: A1553 and A1554
  • Aluminum Case
  • Ion-X Glass
  • Composite Back

Standard Apple Watch 1st Gen. was the more expensive of the two with a stainless steel case as opposed to aluminum.

  • Model: A1553 and A1554
  • Stainless Steel Case
  • Sapphire Crystal
  • Ceramic Back

Apple Watch Series 1

With the Series 1, Apple upgraded to a dual core processor for a faster watch, but everything else remained the same.

  • Model: A1802 and A1803
  • Ion-X Glass
  • Composite Back

Apple Watch Series 2

With Apple Watch 2 they added GPS and increased water resistance (but not waterproof). And this time they’ve gone back to 2 different versions…

Aluminum

  • Model: A1757 and A1758
  • Aluminum Case
  • Ion-X Glass
  • Ceramic Back

Stainless Steel

  • Model: A1757 and A1758
  • Stainless Steel Case
  • Sapphire Crystal
  • Ceramic Back

Apple Watch Series 3

The first giveaway that you’ve got a Series 3 is Siri. When you ask your Apple Watch a question, does Siri speak or is she silent? If Siri talks aloud back to you, then you’ve got a Series 3. This is also the first fully waterproof watch from Apple.

Series 3 GPS Only

  • Model: A1858 and A1859
  • Ion-X Glass
  • Composite Back

Series 3 GPS + Cellular Aluminum

  • Model: A1860 and A1861
  • Red Digital Crown Cap
  • Ion-X Glass
  • Ceramic Back

Series 3 GPS + Cellular Stainless Steel

  • Model: A1860 and A1861
  • Red Digital Crown Cap
  • Sapphire Crystal
  • Ceramic Back
